My Current Project

Important Tips

1) SAVE FREQUENTLY! I cannot express this enough, and I have learned this lesson the hard way.

2) Learn to rely on the escape (Esc) key on your keyboard. The Esc key will become your best friend. Pressing the Esc key removes the focus from an object. After placing an object, another object is automatically loaded, making it easier and quicker to place multiples of an object, like trees or fences. When you are finished placing a particular object, click the Esc key to stop another object from being loaded. This way you don't accidentally place objects in places you don't want them.
The same applies to moving objects. After you have moved an object, click the Esc key to completely unload the object so that it doesn't get moved again. This is extremely important when working with roads, sidewalks, and bridges.

3) CHECK AND REBUILD ROUTING DATA FREQUENTLY! Almost as important as saving is checking and rebuilding the Routing Data. Routing effects lag in game more than any other aspect. If the routing has not been managed properly it can crash your game. This is explained in detail in the Routing tutorial.  A rule I follow is to check my routing after I make changes to my world.

4) If, while testing, you experience "freezing", resolve routing issues. This can only be performed in CAW, so a new export is required after the routing issues have been resolved.

5) Though it takes a lot of time, it is a good idea to export and test your world regularly. It's easier to catch and fix problems along the way, and in the long run, it actually saves time.

6) ALWAYS smooth your roads after completing a section. Also, check for tears. More detail on this is discussed in the Roads tutorial.

7) Do not upload your world to the Exchange until you are satisfied that you have completed it. Once a world is uploaded to the Exchange, it cannot be uploaded again.

8)  Some items do not spawn immediately, like, for example, the fire flies, so be patient. Six game days passed before I discovered my first vampire in game.

9) Try to remember to cluster your trees. This will help with game performance.

10) Be sure to provide an adequate amount of "townie" housing, and place these residences close to your businesses so that those businesses are staffed. This mainly pertains to the night clubs, or any business you create that contains a bar.

11) If a segment of road is to be a dead-end, it should end with an intersection road segment. This instructs the program that the road has ended and the vehicles should make a U-turn at that point.

12) Keep spawners to a minimum. Again, this is relevant to game performance. What is "minimum"? In order to provide complete game play, one of each spawner should be placed, but try to avoid large multiples of each.
